Erik Sommer's "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" is a stained spray paint on raw canvas work anchored by a heavy fold of cobalt blue running the full height of the left edge, its surface ridged where the paint pooled and dried unevenly. Directly above it, a dense knot of mauve, plum, and black tangles into a single dark mass, tight and compressed against the openness of the rest of the canvas. Red drips scatter loosely across the center and right, thinning into fine spatter as they move away from the blue.
At 152 × 142 cm, this is among the largest canvases in Sommer's current body of work, and the scale gives the sparse red marks room to breathe against the raw ground. Small flecks of yellow, teal, and navy surface throughout, easy to miss on first look but essential to the sense that the surface accumulated over time rather than arriving all at once. The title's celebratory tone sits at odds with the somber cluster of dark tones on the left, a tension Sommer leaves unresolved.
For collectors, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" stands out for its scale and its willingness to let a single dense passage of color carry an otherwise open composition, making it a strong statement piece within a collection of Sommer's work.
